Announcing the OTP/BSUFans Bowl Pick ‘Em Winner

Oh Bowl season… you bring your fancy sponsors, gift bags, and most importantly, a chance to compete against fellow Cardinals fans for the right to claim you are the most all-knowing and wise of the BSU faithful. This year’s Bowl Pick ‘Em, hosted over on Yahoo and cosponsored by Scotty’s Brewhouse, brought out 33 brave souls, 28 of which actually entered picks. On the line for the champ was not only the right to say they were the most accurate picker of the BSU fanbase, but also a mini-helmet of the team of their choosing, and a $10 Scotty’s gift card. Sweet swag for a free contest.

Drumroll…

This year’s winner is Smitty, with Smitty’s Defensive Picks. Smitty nailed a staggering 24 of 34, which is just jaw dropping considering the amount of upsets that happened in Bowl season. His top point-gainer was his 34 confidence point Air Force victory, and he was correct in his 4 highest confidence point values and 8 of his top 10. That, ladies and gents, is how you win this sort of event.

The rest of the standings can be seen here, and congrats to Smitty for a big win, his new helmet, and the food and/or beverage he is about to enjoy.

In case you were curious about the site leadership here, RV clocked in in 24th place with 15 correct entries and 274 points. Alan ended up 13th with 16 correct picks and 320 points. Edge was nowhere to be found.

Some shout outs also go to some particular entrants for their creativity on the naming front. Skillz That Killz is either boosting our street cred or referencing Dodgeball, there’s Mark Mangino Eats Children, Super Burrito’s (a LaBamba’s reference is the quickest way to my heart), and my personal favorite… Dan LeFevour’s Bald Spot. Nice work everyone, and congrats again to Smitty!

Bowl Pick ‘Em Reminder!

Reminder to all who read here that if you haven’t already entered in the Bowl Pick ‘Em for OTP, then you need to hop this link to do so. The group ID is #6856. You don’t need a password or anything, but be creative with the team name. We like that kind of thing.

If you have already entered, but haven’t filled out your picks yet, you need to do that by Saturday, as that’s the first Bowl. Get ’em in or be mocked and ridiculed.

Champion of the league gets a mini-helmet of the team of their choosing and a $10 Scotty’s Brewhouse gift card. Feel free to take your mini-helmet to the bar with you as you stuff your face with loaded waffle fries and dill chips. Chicks dig mini-helmets almost as much as they dig a man with fingers coated in sour cream and nacho cheese.

More Bowl Pick ‘Em Prizes!

As you may remember from this post, OverThePylon is happy to bring to the masses another Bowl Pick ‘Em. Bragging rights over other fans and proving that you, among all, can blindly pick college football games should be enough of a reward. However, shoud it not be, OTP offered up a mini-helmet of your choosing should you come in numero uno.

Today, we’re proud to announce that the prize pool just got significantly more delicious as Scotty from Scotty’s Brewhouse has kicked in a $10 gift card for our champion.

I would imagine most, if not all, reading this site have been to Scotty’s before, but in case you haven’t, locate the little red “X” in the top right of your browser, click it, shut off your pc, and get your ass to the closest Brewhouse… pronto. Muncie, Bloomington, West Lafayette, downtown Indy, and northside Indy are where you need to be for all your Bowl watching festivities, your tasty food cravings, and fantastic specials, events, and atmosphere.

You can check out the Brewhouse here, and in case you are too lazy to click above to see how to be eligible for the prizes… enjoy:

We’re getting an early jump this season on the Bowl Pick ‘Em phenom for all the OTPites and BSU fans out there. Instead of the cumbersome interface we used last year, we’re switching over to Yahoo. Each of the Bowl Games will be selected by you and assigned a confidence amount 1-34. Damn sure that Central Michigan and the Rust Belt Tim Tebow is running wild on their opponent? Then assign them 34 points. Pretty simple, and if you’ve found your way here, you can do it.

Here’s how you yourself get there….

1.) Head on over to the Yahoo Sports Bowl Pick ‘Em Challenge or click here.

2.) If you don’t have a Yahoo ID you’ll need to create one. Takes about 3 minutes. tops.

3.) Click on “Join Group” on the main page, then “Join Group” on the next page.

4.) It will ask for a group ID and password. Our group is public, so no password is needed, but the group ID is 6856.

5.) Click Save and Continue, name your picks, and that’s it. Simple stuff.

When the bowls come out this Sunday, log on in and make your picks. There was talk last year of some sort of prize, and this year, there will be a prize for whomever finishes first… a Ball State mini helmet, from Schutt, pictured below, or a mini helmet of the team of your choosing. Like Notre Dame? Fine. We’ll get you one of those. Like Kentucky? Super! Florida? Pushing it. Louisville or Tennessee? Get bent.

UPDATE: Scotty’s Brewhouse has offered up a $10 gift card to our winner as well. Yes… that means you can pick college football game and win tasty food and beverages. Sounds like win-win to me.

To be eligible for the prize, drop an email with your team name and your name to overthepylon@gmail.com so we know who to send this puppy to should you win.

Bracket Reminder

If you’ve been meaning to get that bracket into the OTP Bracket Challenge and just never got around to it, it’s now or never. Quite literally.

The curtain rises on the 09 edition of March Madness at noon on Thursday and your brackets have to be in by that time. It’s that time of the year, boys and girls… a time to cut out of work and find a sports bar… a time to leach your company’s bandwidth as you follow game after game on your work computer. Sure, it’s a loss of productivity, but the economy is already in the shitter. What’s 4 hours a day really going to hurt?

You should do this because the world of sports revolves around proving yourself to be smarter than the other jackass at the bar at 10am sucking down Jack and Cokes waiting for the games to start so you are assured a primo location at said bar while you choke down Nachos and wings and all other methods to slowly commit suicide one cheese filled deep fried bite at a time. So we hear. Fill out your brackets, OTPers, and feast on ball of the basket variety.

Introducing the OTP Bracket Challenge

Granted, we’re a football blog, but like everyone else this time of year, we’re catching basketball fever, spurned on in no small measure by the victories on Thursday by both the Kentucky Wildcats and the Cardinals of Ball State. Because of this said fever, as well as the pending lack of productivity known as March Madness, we’ve created the OverThePylon March Madness Bracket Pool, run by the good folks over at FunOfficePools.
Friends and readers of OTP are welcome to prove their intelligence and basketball savvy, and other blogs from around the interwebs, feel free to stake your reputation.

To enter the pool, here’s what to do:

1. Go to the Fun Office Pools website and register for an account if you don’t have it.

  • Click here. (FunOfficePools.com if you can’t get the link)
  • If you’re not automatically logged in, then sign in. (If you haven’t used it before, create a new account. It’s free.)

2. After logging in with your account you have or just created, go to the “Join a Pool” tab at the top.

  • Select “March Madness 09” in the “Pool Type” box
  • Type “OverThePylon” in the “Pool Name” box
  • Leave the “Password” field blank
  • Name your entry in the “Selection Name” box. Points for creativity. (This name you don’t need to remember. It’s simply the name of your team)
  • Click “Join Pool”

3. Make your selections after the field is announced on Sunday. Picks have to be in by tip off of the first game on Thursday March 19.

If you’ve made it through all that and you’re seeing a page with OverThePylon at the top, you’re registered. Congrats. From that point forward it’s simply a matter of gaining familiarity with the various pages and such on the menu of the left hand side of the page.

There’s nothing fancy with Cinderella bonuses, picking upsets, so on and so forth. Pick a totally chalk bracket if you dare. You can sign up now, and make your picks later. Let’s get it on, folks.

Bowl Pickin’

To spread some love amongst the blogosphere this Holiday Bowl Season, OTP participated in several Bowl Pick ‘Ems spread across all sorts of formats. Some were with fellow BSU fans, others were hosted by sites or people we respect immensely in the blog scene. Here’s how we fared:

Pool: Rocky Top Talk’s
Hosted by: Rocky Top Talk, a fantastic Tennessee site that was one of the first sites on the net to link to us. Joel and crew do a fantastic job on all things blog related, and the team over there are some of the only UT fans we can stomach.
Record: 17-17
Results: 10th out of 47
Thoughts: Lost a 30-pointer on Bama and a 34-pointer on CMU, 25 and 26 on BYU and Troy respecitvely. Serves us right for picking our conference brethren and other mid-majors. RTT used FunOfficePools.com and I like the layout quite a bit.

Pool: BSUFans.com
Hosted by: Uh… bsufans.com
Record: 17-17
Results: 3rd out of 21
Thoughts: Same story as above. And we picked against Kentucky, which means something terrbile karmicly I’m sure.

Pool: Ja’Larry Bird’s Disciples
Hosted by: Clay Travis, who if you’re not reading on a semi-regular basis you are missing out on something. Go now.
Record: 20-14
Results: 58 out of 236
Thoughts: The largest pool we were in. Between Ball State, Troy, Texas Tech, and CMU, we lost 118 points. Thanks, BSU.

Pool: BHGP Championship
Hosted by: BlackHeartGoldPants, one of the funniest college football blogs on the net.
Record: 21-13
Results: 3rd out of 76
Thoughts: Texas Tech, Cincinnati, and Bama all screwed us in this one. This is one we were actually ahead in with 3 games to go.

So two bronze medals for us here at OTP. Huzzah!
